According to the Pakua Loshu formula of Feng shui (also known as 8 Mansions or Pat Chai Feng Shui), each person has 4 good directions, and 4 bad directions. By knowing which 4 direcitons are your personal good directions, you can maximise your luck by facing your good directions in almost any situation. To discover these directions, you first need to calculate your Kua Number.

The Basic Kua Formula

Before we begin, you might like to know that there are already free websites out there who calculate this for you using a program. Search Google, or click here to launch the WOFS.com version (you may have to sign as a free member to use).

The usage recommended here is a pretty simplified usage of the formula. If you really want to go deep into this formula and it’s uses, I highly recommend reading Lillian Too’s comprehensive book on this subject in here  Applied Feng Shiui: Pa-Kua and Lo Shu book. This book was the third book she wrote (the design is vintage!), and contains lots of detailed use cases on how the formula is applied.

Using the Lunar Year 

To calculate your Kua number, determine your lunar birth year and then use the formulas below to calculate it. For most people, the lunar year is the same year as their western calendar year of birth. For example, if you were born in June 2005, then your lunar year is also 2005. However, those born early in the year (i.e. Jan and Feb) must check whether they were born before or after the lunar year started.

The Chinese lunar year cycle (e.g. Year of the Dog, Sheep, etc) typically begins slightly later than the western calendar year, usually at the end of January or the first 2 weeks of February. Hence those who are born in Jan/Feb, might actually belong to the lunar year of last year. For example, the chinese lunar year of 1975 began on 11 February 1975. If you were born any day in 1975 before Feb 11, then you were actually born in the lunar year of 1974. You should then be using 1974 to calculate your Kua number. For Men

Take the last 2 digits of your lunar birth year and add it up. If the sum of both numbers result in 2 digits, add the 2 digits up. Do this until you have 1 digit remaining. This remaining digit is called the Kua Factor. Now, if you are born before Year 2000, subtract the Kua factor from 10. If you were born after the year 2000, subtract the Kua factor from 9. The resulting number is your Kua Number. If it is 5, then convert it to 2.

Example 1: 1973
Kua Factor = (7 + 3 = 10) = (1+0) = 1
Kua Number = 10 - 1 = 9

Example 2: 2002
Kua Factor = 0 + 2 = 2
Kua Number = 9 - 2 = 7

For Women

Take the last 2 digits of your lunar birth year and add it up. If the sum of both numbers result in 2 digits, add the 2 digits up. Do this until you have 1 digit remaining. This remaining digit is called the Kua Factor. Now, if you are born before Year 2000, add 5 to the Kua factor. If you were born after the year 2000, add 6 to your Kua Factor. If the result number is 2 digits, add them up until they become a single digit. The resulting number is your Kua Number. If it is 5, then convert it to 8.

Example 1: 1973
Kua Factor = (7 + 3 = 10) = (1+0) = 1
Kua Number = 5 + 1 = 6

Example 2: 2002
Kua Factor = 0 + 2 = 2
Kua Number = 6 + 2 = 8

Understanding Good and Bad Directions

Now that you’ve calculated your Kua number, look up this table to determine your auspicious directions an inauspicious directions:

Wealth & Success - This is your very best direction for wealth and overall luck! Try to sit and sleep facing this direction for interviews, working, eating, watching TV, etc. This direction will bring you fame, honour, power and lots of wealth luck!

Health - This is your 2nd best direction - sit or sleep facing this direction for personal health luck, especially if you’re prone to illness. Older people which are more susceptible to sickness should sleep facing their Health Direction.

Love - This is your 3rd best and personal love direction. Sleep facing this direction to tap your love & relationships luck if you are trying to find a mate.

Good Luck- This is your 4th best direction - use this if you cannot tap any of the first 3 good directions.

Bad Luck - This is your 4th worst direction and you should avoid facing or sleeping towards this direction unless you cannot tap any of your 4 auspicious directions. Some minor bad luck will come but it’s not the end of the world.

5 Ghosts - This is your 3rd worst direction which can bring burglary, loss of harmony and minor illness if you face this direction or if your main door faces this direction.

6 Killings - This is your 2nd worst direction and and can bring lawsuits, serious illnesses and sometimes even death if you’re already in a serious condition! Avoid it!

Total Loss - This is the worse direction for yourself. You will lose everything, your children will die and your family will end! You MUST rebuild your main door if you are the breadwinner and your main door faces this direction!
