Compasses for Australia & New Zealand

Every serious feng shui practioner needs to own a good compass – so I recommend buying the best one can afford. None of that crappy $2 dollar shop ones – they are not accurate, and won’t result in good compass readings. If you’re practicing Flying Star Feng Shui, you need a compass that can give you accurate readings up to the degrees. This is particularly so if you’re measuring the direction of your house and main door – an slight degree off changes the entire chart for the whole house.

My favourite brand of compass are ones made by Silva.  The cheapest Silva does a good job – and costs around NZD$48 I think. Silva makes compasses for three regions – MN (Magnetic North), ME (Magnetic equator) and MS (Magnetic South). For NZ and Australian residents, MS is the one you need to get. Their compass needles are weighted to stablise quicker, so the ME ones which are largely used in the US and Asian countries point South when they are used here in New Zealand, and parts of Australia.

If you’re buying a Silva, check the back of the compass for the right region (ME, MN or MS). If you aren’t buying a Silva compass - ensure that it points correctly to North while you’re at the store. This shouldn’t be a problem if you’re buying compasses from local camping shops – they normally stock the right kind.
