Someone wrote to me asking…
My husband and I are installing a new kitchen floor. We’re going to use laminate that looks like wood instead of the real thing. My question is two-fold I guess, ONE, how do you feel about laminate flooring instead of the real thing? And TWO, which direction should the laminate run? For example, do we make the planks run east and west, or north and south?
In terms of your first question, real wood is better but laminated floors can work too. There’s no hard and fast rule to this in terms of direction. The important thing is to ensure that the grains FLOW in the same direction. For example, parquet flooring always have conflicting grains of wood flowing in opposite L shape directions – so is not considerd good feng shui. Wooden floor boards the flow in the same direction are very good. Matai, Rimu and most timber flooring of older houses that can be polished will look absolutely stunning and has good feng shui too!
